Long rivet jig

This jig will allow you to do the long rivets for the rear trunnion and center support either with a shop press or just a hammer. I made this with a piece of 2" x  3" x .250" steel conduit 2.50" wide. You will also need a 7/8" x 1.50" bolt/nut and a 1" square piece of .250" steel scrap. I started by drilling a 1" hole in the top of the conduit and a 3/8" hole through the bolt.

Next I welded the nut to the top of the conduit using the bolt to center it. Using the .250" scrap I made a 5/16" detent for the rivet head and welded it in place on the inside bottom of the conduit. Insert the bolt and use a guide rod to ensure that it is centered before you weld it in place.

When you position the receiver for riveting be sure to center the rivet in the hole through the bolt and then tighten the blot to hold the assembly. I used a piece of 3/8" aluminum rod with a .156" hole in one end to slide over the exposed rivet to ensure it was centered. Use a piece of 3/8" hardened drill rod as the ram. You can make a 5/16" detent in one end to form a dome head on the rivet or leave it alone to have a flat head. I made a cutout on one side to accommodate the trigger guard when riveting the center support but this can be accomplished by offsetting the bolt hole on the top by 3/8" to one side.

Once you have the assembly locked in place you can crush the rivet in a press or with a hammer.
